Description
‘Wise Women were the healers and herbalists of the village, who would cultivate herbs and forage wild plants to create tonics, teas and balms for various aliments which they would then sell to the villagers, they were also the local midwives. They possessed extensive knowledge of the natural world, and had an understanding of all the properties of the native plants and fungi. This was passed down for centuries, mother to daughter.
The featured plants were used for their medicinal benefits and were also believed to carry magical properties. Ladies Mantle for example can be used to relieve menstrual and menopausal problems, Cowslips soothe colds and insomnia, the Dandelion is a diuretic and useful in helping liver problems.
There was once a wide spread belief that these women could turn themselves into animals (called their familiars) the most common being toads, frogs, cats and hares, which is why I included the toad and the frog. They represent the wise women keeping watch over their herb gardens!’
